The LEED Dynamic Plaque, the Green Sports Alliance, and Happy Thanksgiving

I would like to share a quick update on our work with the USGBC regarding the LEED Dynamic Plaque, the Green Sports Alliance, and of course wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving.

As you are aware, over the past couple of months we have shared our concerns about the omission of purchasing in USGBC’s new LEED Dynamic Plaque.

Last week, Gary Thomas (CB Richard Ellis) and I met with members of the USGBC’s leadership team including:

  • Rick Fedrizzi (CEO)
  • Mahesh Ramanujam (COO)
  • Scot Horst (Chief Product Officer)
  • Brendan Owens (VP LEED)
  • Allan Skodowski (Transwestern – immediate past Chairman of the Board)
  • Kevin Hydes (Integral Group — past Chairman of the Board) and others.

It is clear that this iteration of the Dynamic Plaque is Version 1.0 and we are now on a path to gather more input that will continue to demonstrate the USGBC’s leadership. And yes, in the future the program will address purchases of cleaning products and other materials used within a building.

And while this result sounds simple and expected, but considering all of the global issues, differing building types and other things that the USGBC must consider – getting purchasing on the radar screen was an extremely important accomplishment.

So it was an excellent meeting and it happened on the same day that the USGBC received the Champions of the Earth Award the flagship environmental award from the United Nations. Well-deserved and the best part is – we are still just getting started and the best is yet to come!

Also last week we participated in a Board of Directors meeting for the Green Sports Alliance (GSA). During our meeting we held a discussion with representatives from the major professional leagues about a number of important initiatives that we are proposing to help them operate their facilities more sustainably – and yes, Green Cleaning is one of those programs. Very exciting!

The new “Playbook” (guide) on Green Cleaning in Sports Facilities is coming along nicely and during the ISSA Convention we began talking to potential sponsors. ISSA has already committed to sponsoring the Playbook and GSA staff is now in the process of following up on the 100+ leads we got from the Convention.

If your company is interested in sponsoring this document which will be used to promote Green Cleaning to pro and collegiate facilities; as well as other sports facilities including schools, rec leagues and others; please let me know. There is a sponsorship level for every budget.

Finally, I want to wish all of you, your families, friends and colleagues a Happy Thanksgiving. It is an amazing American holiday and we really do have so much to be thankful for.

Best regards,

Steve
